Random bits. Inside:
  • personal crap
  • random news item
  • book mini-review
  • game mini-reviews
  • netflix review
Not necessarily in the above order.

Random news item: does it seem wrong that 1 in 32 american adults are currently in prison, on probation or on parole? Is this just the war on drugs? Why so many? It's one of those well-known statistics that the US is up there with China and other enlightened places in prison population. But, 1 in 32 makes it seem a lot more real. 1 in 100? Seems remote. 1 in 32? Could be my neighbor.

Netflix: why didn't I do this earlier? Hmm? Anyway, so far disks are coming a regular two days after I return them. Just got the fifth & sixth disks in 2 weeks. At this rate I've already broke even with what it would cost to rent from blockbuster.

Books:

  • Finished Beyond Oil a few days ago. While the conversational tone (and rambling, sometimes irrelevant anecdotes) was a bit off-putting in a fairly technical book, I certainly learned a fair bit and have a clearer picture about oil issues. I also am not completely confused when reading certain discussions like specimens A and B: instead of having to look up energy-related details the authors take for granted, I already have some knowledge of the topic. I still have to look up a lot of regional things to fully understand them though.
  • Reading A Canticle for Leibowitz on aphrael's recommendation. Only halfway finished though. I can't seem to get into in a "stay up all night" way, but do find it interesting. I like reading post-apocalyptic & disaster fiction. :)

Zelda has so far been pretty good. I took a break once I got to a frustrating part involving a lot of shooting of arrows and throwing of boomerang and sword-swinging on horseback. This is cool because you can move the horse using the analog stick (on the nunchuck) and use the wii-mote to shoot/swing the weapons. But it's really tricky for me to get the hang of and I got frustrated. So a break.

A break to try civ4 which is now installed (yes I was a complete wanker last night with my inability to just do it). Started the tutorial, got into the "play on your own" part and didn't stop until midnight. I guess that says I find it interesting. It remains to be seen if I can learn it well enough to show my face to the other civ players...

And now the personal crap. You may want to hit the back button now. :|

Part of finding new things to do and getting out is finding things I actually like to do. Kind of hard when you've been pretty limited in activities. So what are some things I haven't tried that I might want to? Won't know until I try! Some I've come up with or had suggested:

  • Join a art museum or museum visiting group (go to museums & talk about it), suggested by stacky I think.
  • Go board gaming with people. The unfortunate one here is that a lot of common games that have a lot of clubs I'm just not that interested in (e.g. 'Go' which I never really got into). Then again, around here there are probably plenty of game people playing more interesting things, but I'm not sure I'd want to do the giant group of people meetings. Also not sure I would really find it that interesting anymore as I get bored at family game nights these days...
  • Dancing. Not ballroom or square dancing. Like clubbing or raves I guess. (I think raves have dancing, but what kind I wouldn't know). This one is problematic because I'm not just going to just show up somewhere and try dancing. I think without a "guide" I'd be too embarrassed to get "into it" and thus wouldn't give it a fair shake. This one seems back-burnered for now. Maybe after I accumulate some friends (god, that sounded like a stat one earns in a game.)
  • Volunteer at a library or other local institution.
  • Not "new" per se, but go take some classes somewhere. Haven't taken classes while working a "real" (post-college) job, so it might be interesting. Wouldn't mind some more history or current events.
  • Volunteer for a local police reserve force. Um, not sure about this. Major commitment also.
  • Join some kind of musical group. Church choir wouldn't be a new way to do that, but as I'm pretty firmly agnostic, it would be a little weird. There are non-church groups I'm sure (and it's not like it would have to be a choir. a band would be cool, but not sure how that would work). Also, not in any way "in form" for singing/playing so would have to practice. Should probably wait until/if I build up some skill. :)
  • Join some organized sports team or regular game. E.g. ultimate near work. +1 exercise.
Probably some more, but that's all I can think of at the moment. Turns out there's a lot to do that would let me meet people. :) Now, I just need to deal with the other personal crap that I can't talk about online. :(

Question about the Wii by debacle (4.00 / 1) #1 Fri Dec 01, 2006 at 12:58:07 AM EST
I am left handed. Will I be hindered if I try and southpaw the wiimote, or would I be better off using it like the plebian right handed detritus?

If you're into board gaming, try finding an RPG group. You're probably thinking "Yeah, right." but if you find the right group it's more about the social interaction and a circle of friends than your +3 radiant sword of chromatic elemental destruction.

Post-educational organized sports. :(

The internet is a perfect venue for talking about stupid personal crap, just ask <redacted>.

not sure by R343L (4.00 / 1) #3 Fri Dec 01, 2006 at 01:10:24 AM EST
Some things it seems like it matters which hand it is on (e.g. tennis). Zelda I think you could play either way, but Link holds the sword in his right hand so it might feel weird. Something like monkey ball would be fine either hand (well some of the mini-games maybe not).

I guess what I'm saying is "it depends". I'm not a leftie, so...

I too am a south paw, by garlic (4.00 / 1) #13 Fri Dec 08, 2006 at 01:20:09 PM EST
and the wii remote nunchuck thing is awesome, because you get to decide which remote goes into which hand. For things where handed ness matters (like wii sports) they ask you which hand you'll be using. So I do lefty baseball swings and tennis swings and golf swings and bowling (does that matter? maybe...) with no problem.

don't know by R343L (2.00 / 0) #4 Fri Dec 01, 2006 at 01:11:34 AM EST
  1. Not sure I'm up for 6 hours, but I'm willing to try anything once. :)
  2. I was going to ask if you were checking tomorrow and if I could tag along, but I can always tag along on monday.
Thanks for being friendly btw. It's not like you have to and it's not like you don't have plenty to do...

Check boardgamegeek, too by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #8 Fri Dec 01, 2006 at 10:01:25 AM EST
you may find some local groups that play shorter games. I'm not that into Go myself.

checking by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #11 Fri Dec 01, 2006 at 03:45:17 PM EST
the online stuff says monday-wednesday with friday sometimes, so tomorrow isn't a good bet.

also, it's not like i'm going to go talk to them or anything; i'll scope out if they're there and then email them. :)

as for being friendly --- husi is, to a certain extent, my tribe. you're part of the tribe; of course i'd want to help out, as i can.

But oh well. We shall see.

So, if husi is a tribe, then shouldn't we have like a costume or something? /me ducks

Also, imagine a picture of me doing some sort of Xbox 360 gang sign here.

That is a jaunty puppy. by blixco (2.00 / 0) #7 Fri Dec 01, 2006 at 09:43:33 AM EST
Have you broken any windows, TVs, lamps, or etc with your wiimote yet?

I assume I will, once I get mine.  Then my wife will be all "I told you gaming was a bad thing" and I'll be all "shut up" and she'll be all "make me" and I'll be like "no you" and she'll make me sleep on the porch.

broken nothing with the wii by R343L (4.00 / 1) #10 Fri Dec 01, 2006 at 11:42:13 AM EST
Always wear the wrist strap (which has NOT broken or even shown signs of) so the few times I've "lost control" were not disasters. :)

What you have to do when you get it, is get your wife into it. Then SHE can break something. :)

But the wrist strap is a good idea.
