Netflix: why didn't I do this earlier? Hmm? Anyway, so far disks are coming a regular two days after I return them. Just got the fifth & sixth disks in 2 weeks. At this rate I've already broke even with what it would cost to rent from blockbuster.
Books:
- Finished Beyond Oil a few days ago. While the conversational tone (and rambling, sometimes irrelevant anecdotes) was a bit off-putting in a fairly technical book, I certainly learned a fair bit and have a clearer picture about oil issues. I also am not completely confused when reading certain discussions like specimens A and B: instead of having to look up energy-related details the authors take for granted, I already have some knowledge of the topic. I still have to look up a lot of regional things to fully understand them though.
- Reading A Canticle for Leibowitz on aphrael's recommendation. Only halfway finished though. I can't seem to get into in a "stay up all night" way, but do find it interesting. I like reading post-apocalyptic & disaster fiction. :)
Zelda has so far been pretty good. I took a break once I got to a frustrating part involving a lot of shooting of arrows and throwing of boomerang and sword-swinging on horseback. This is cool because you can move the horse using the analog stick (on the nunchuck) and use the wii-mote to shoot/swing the weapons. But it's really tricky for me to get the hang of and I got frustrated. So a break.
A break to try civ4 which is now installed (yes I was a complete wanker last night with my inability to just do it). Started the tutorial, got into the "play on your own" part and didn't stop until midnight. I guess that says I find it interesting. It remains to be seen if I can learn it well enough to show my face to the other civ players...
And now the personal crap. You may want to hit the back button now. :|
Part of finding new things to do and getting out is finding things I actually like to do. Kind of hard when you've been pretty limited in activities. So what are some things I haven't tried that I might want to? Won't know until I try! Some I've come up with or had suggested:
- Join a art museum or museum visiting group (go to museums & talk about it), suggested by stacky I think.
- Go board gaming with people. The unfortunate one here is that a lot of common games that have a lot of clubs I'm just not that interested in (e.g. 'Go' which I never really got into). Then again, around here there are probably plenty of game people playing more interesting things, but I'm not sure I'd want to do the giant group of people meetings. Also not sure I would really find it that interesting anymore as I get bored at family game nights these days...
- Dancing. Not ballroom or square dancing. Like clubbing or raves I guess. (I think raves have dancing, but what kind I wouldn't know). This one is problematic because I'm not just going to just show up somewhere and try dancing. I think without a "guide" I'd be too embarrassed to get "into it" and thus wouldn't give it a fair shake. This one seems back-burnered for now. Maybe after I accumulate some friends (god, that sounded like a stat one earns in a game.)
- Volunteer at a library or other local institution.
- Not "new" per se, but go take some classes somewhere. Haven't taken classes while working a "real" (post-college) job, so it might be interesting. Wouldn't mind some more history or current events.
- Volunteer for a local police reserve force. Um, not sure about this. Major commitment also.
- Join some kind of musical group. Church choir wouldn't be a new way to do that, but as I'm pretty firmly agnostic, it would be a little weird. There are non-church groups I'm sure (and it's not like it would have to be a choir. a band would be cool, but not sure how that would work). Also, not in any way "in form" for singing/playing so would have to practice. Should probably wait until/if I build up some skill. :)
- Join some organized sports team or regular game. E.g. ultimate near work. +1 exercise.
Special bonus: puppy!
