...and idiots still store passwords in the cleartext? That the very creators of the site don't get it is disturbing to say the least

I'm floored. Just floored.

Quick question by wumpus (2.00 / 0) #9 Sat Dec 16, 2006 at 10:03:28 AM EST
So how many nanoseconds did they save vs. cracking the "crypt"ed passwords in scoop?

Wumpus

Depends by coryking (4.00 / 1) #13 Sat Dec 16, 2006 at 03:42:55 PM EST
On the clue-factor of the database jax0rers.

Scoop at least has obscurity on its side.  You'd have to look at the hash algorithm first.  At a simple glance you you wouldn't know the difference between Crypt and SHA2.

Script kiddies wouldn't figure it out - they don't have a clue.  Course, script kiddies don't jack databases either, they just install IRC bots or warez sites....

A website that links to other websites, submitted by users, and voted up or down by users! What an amazing idea!

$300/share!  Any buyers?

... it is a pretty idea for a "what comes after kuro5hin-style user submitted content".  So is the digg voting model, which is the one I stole for my site :-)

Are you kidding? by mrgoat (2.00 / 0) #14 Sun Dec 17, 2006 at 12:12:55 AM EST
It's 2006 - I'm suprised people are using password that aren't their usernames. I've been pushing an issue on password security at work for a while now - but people don't do anything that costs money until after it bites them in the ass and costs a whole heap of money.

Could've at least stored the damn things as salted MD5.

Real-World Passwords:

We used to quip that "password" is the most common password. Now it's "password1." Who said users haven't learned anything about security?

I read his blog too. Saddening and enlightening at the same time. Also entertaining.
